Prostavar RX

Abundant in sterol-rich saw palmetto, beta-sitosterol and other all-natural ingredients, Prostavar claims to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. It also claims to cut down on embarrassing urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate, such as incontinence, urinary retention, painful or bloody urination and incomplete bladder emptying. But the real results tell you everything you need to know about Prostavar: studies show it has a 94% success rate, with real results appearing in days, not weeks. It also contains the most sterols out of of prostate supplements—a whopping 139mg—nearly three times the amount compared to other over-the-counter supplements.

Ingredients:
Prostavar mostly contains saw palmetto, beta-sitosterol, pygeum extract and quercitin. It also contains vitamin E, zinc monomethionine and lycopene, a tomato-derived extract rich in antioxidants.

Does it Work?:
Definitely. Prostavar contains plenty of saw palmetto and beta-sitosterol, which were shown in several studies to reduce prostate inflammation, or BPH. Pygeum extract also helps reduce significant prostate enlargement. According to one European study, it decreased nearly all BPH symptoms by 40%, including frequency of nocturnal urination and poor urinary flow.

Quercitin may also treat men with chronic prostratitis, or a chronic infectious swelling of the prostate. According to a study reported in Urology, men who took a supplement containing quercitin reduced most of their symptoms by at least 25%, including pain and inflammation.

Our lab tests also show Prostavar contains nearly 159 mg of sterols per serving, indicating this is a high quality supplement. Sterols, which exist naturally in saw palmetto, improve how effective it reduces prostate inflammation and enlargement. High levels are a good thing—it indicates this is saw palmetto at its purest. Overly processed saw palmetto typically contains low levels of sterols, however, which you'll often see in cheap, over-the-counter prostate supplements. Case in point: Prostavar is extremely effective, with no known side effects.

Is it Safe?:
es. All of Prostavar's ingredients do not contain any known significant side effects, unlike other prostate health supplements. There are also no known contraindications associated with Prostavar. Meaning, it won't cause a bad reaction if used with other supplements, herbs or drugs.

Grade: A+
A+. We've called it the Tiger Woods of prostate health supplements for a reason: it works. All of its ingredients are shown to treat an enlarged prostate and promote prostate health with overwhelming evidence, proving it also treats urinary pain and infections. Prostavar is the most effective prostate health supplement on the market, and it's definitely worth your money.

Vasotrexx

This all-natural prostate health supplement by Dartford Kent Nutraceuticals claims to promote prostate health through a proprietary blend of vegetarian ingredients, including pygeum extract, saw palmeto extract and antioxidant-rich vitamin E. Vasotrexx also claims to treat symptoms related to chronic prostatitis and benign prostatic hypertrophy, two main diseases caused by poor prostate health. Better yet, studies show it promotes prostate health safely, with no known side effects.

Ingredients:
Vasotrexx is mainly comprised of a proprietary blend containing pygeum extract, lycopene, nettle root extract, saw palmetto extract, pumpkin seed oil, vitamin E, vitamin D, zinc and selenium.

Does it Work?:
Most likely yes. Our lab tests show Vasotrexx contains over 100mg of sterols, a key ingredient that improves the efficacy of saw palmetto. Saw palmetto was identified as an effective prostate health aid in several studies, reducing prostate inflammation, enlargement and urinary problems. Pygeum extract is also very effective for treating prostate enlargement symptoms, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). According to them, there is significant evidence that pygeum extract helps reduce urinary frequency, problems with bladder emptying and urinary tract pain, and all problems caused by an enlarged prostate gland.

There's even better news about zinc and vitamin D. Rich in cancer-fighting antioxidants, both the Mayo Clinic and Oregon State University say they play an important role in prostate cancer prevention, shown in several studies to significantly reduce cancer cell formation. It also slows progression of prostate cancer, the second most deadliest cancer amongst American men. Zinc also has an added bonus: its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce prostate inflammation, pain and infection, factors that may lead to benign prostatic hyperplasia or chronic prostatitis.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. Although overdosing on zinc is possible, you would have to purposely overdose on Vasotrexx, which is obviously not recommended. Otherwise Vasotrexx contains no dangerous ingredients, and has no serious side effects identified by any studies.

Grade: A
Although it doesn't contain as many sterols as Prostavar, it still contains at least 50% more sterols compared to other prostate health supplements, such as Prostate Defense or Royal Forte Prostate. There is sufficient evidence it can improve prostate health, however, which may reduce your risk for prostate cancer or painful prostate inflammation

Prost-RX

From the highly regarded Atlanta-based supplement manufacturer Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals, comes this exceptional product. We have it rated the number 3 prostate supplement due to its exceptional formula and high level of ingredients. While many products are essentially one-dimensional (e.g., all saw palmetto or all beta-sitosterol) Prost-Rx got high marks across the board. Only a few steps behind Prostavar and Vasotrexx, it is clearly the best of the rest. Many survey sheets remarked how well Prost-Rx has worked and how it is more effective than Flomaxx and Avadart. Rich in vitamins, minerals and vegetarian-friendly saw palmetto, Prost-RX provides nutritional support for men with a very familiar health problem—an aging and cancer-prone prostate. Though it doesn't claim to prevent prostate cancer or benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), it does claim to provide the prostate with the proper tools to stay healthy and disease-free. Satisfied users also claim it's even more effective than Flomax or Avodart, the only FDA approved drugs specifically approved to treat prostate enlargement.

Ingredients:
Prost-RX contains a rich blend of saw palmetto extract, pygeum extract, quercitin, essential amino acids, Belizian Man Vine extract, mulra puama extract and epimedium extract. Like other effective prostate health supplements, it is also rich in vitamin E, B6 and zinc.

Does it Work?:
Unlike other supplements, Prost-RX contains a variety of effective ingredients, including saw palmetto extract, pygeum extract and quercitin. All three ingredients help reduce symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, including poor bladder emptying, weak stream, bladder or prostate pain. It also helps reduce its size and prevent the development of prostatic diseases, such as benign prostatic hypertrophy. You can't go wrong with plenty of zinc either—according to a study conducted by the National Cancer Institute, participants who took up to 100mg of zinc per day significantly slowed the development of prostate cancer. It also reduced the participants' total prostate cancer risk.

Amino acids may also play an important role in prostate health. According to a study conducted by the Canadian Cancer Research Group, 94% of patients who received amino acid therapy significantly reduced their mortality rate—in fact, no patients died from prostate cancer after receiving amino acid therapy—and stayed in remission longer, improving their survivability. Amino acid therapy also improved normal prostate function in some studies, reducing numerous prostate health problems. The participants also lowered their risk for developing an enlarged prostate.

The evidence surrounding amino acid use is overwhelming. Combined with Saw Palmetto and other core ingredients, there is significant evidence Prost-RX can reduce prostate problems and promote overall prostate health—better yet, it's all-natural and vegetarian-friendly.

Is it Safe?:
Mostly. Overdosing on any minerals or vitamins, especially zinc, can cause stomach pain, fatigue or weakness, but this is unlikely to happen if you use Prost-RX correctly. There are also no significant side effects associated with Saw Palmetto, quercitin or pygeum extract, and is not known to cause any contraindications with other medications.

Grade: A
It may significantly improve the health of your prostate, but doesn't contain as many sterols as Vastorexx or Prostavar. This doesn't mean it's worthless, though—in fact, it may still be as effective as our two leading prostate supplements. You're more likely to get a bigger benefit if you are at risk for developing prostate cancer, however, as most of its ingredients help reduce its development.

Prostate 5XL

This extract-charged formula claims to promote prostate health by modulating 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme that may improve prostate health. The manufacturers of Prostate 5LX Basics enable this by using a supercritical extraction process, which ensures the ingredients in their formula are in its most natural state. Its unique, highly-specialized formula is a favorite among consumers. They report it helped reduce the painful symptoms of prostate enlargement.

Ingredients:
Prostate 5LX contains selenium, saw palmetto, green tea extract, organic pumpkin seed oil, ginger, stinging nettle extract and rosemary leaf supercritical extract.

Does it Work?:
Yes. Our lab tests revealed Prostate 5LX contains high quality levels of saw palmetto, which may play an important role in prostate health. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), significant evidence shows it helps reduce urinary problems caused by prostate enlargement, such as decreased urinary flow, nocturnal urination, and weak stream. Its effects are almost identical to the prescription medication Proscar, but with fewer, less-serious side effects. It has not been shown to reduce the size of the prostate, however.

There is also increasing evidence that rosemary and green tea extract may reduce the risk for prostate cancer. According to some studies, the antioxidants found in both ingredients help protect cells, including prostate cells, from cellular damage, a leading cause of cancerous tumor growths. Regular use may help decrease a man's overall risk for prostate cancer, improving prostate health.

Is it Safe?:
For the most part, yes. Ginger is associated with an increased risk for heartburn, gas, bloating and nausea, however. It can also cause adverse reactions for people with gallstones or blood pressure problems.

Grade: B
Prostate 5LX contains several effective ingredients that may protect men from prostate problems and cancer, making it a safe alternative to prescription drugs. Our lab tests also revealed it contains a high-quality form of saw palmetto, which is shown to treat symptoms of prostate enlargement. This is a solid prostate supplement with high-quality ingredients, earning it a B+.

Prostanol

This fine “soft gel” product from VitalMax Vitamins was designed by Dr. Al Sears, an advocate for the use of natural health products for men. Dr. Sears does an excellent job designing men’s health supplements. Prostanol scored better than most of the products in lab reports. Uses an 85% extract of saw palmetto and had 20mg of beta sitosterol, and provides 266% of the RDA of Zinc. Surprised pygeum is not present in the formula. The proprietary Phytosterol blend of Campsterol, Stigmasterol, Brassicasterol and Sitostanol are effective. The regular price for a one-month supply is $57.45. Created by Mark Rosenberg, M.D., founder of The Institute of Healthy Aging, Prostanol features a unique, sterol-rich blend called Phytosin, which Rosenberg claims reduces prostate or urinary problems, such as frequent urination and prostate inflammation. These results may be seen in mere weeks, with lasting results seen after only one month of use. But the real kicker is its easily digestible soft gel capsules, which dissolve easily—it's considered one of the top fastest-acting supplements available today.

Ingredients:
Prostanol uses a proprietary blend called Phytosin, which contains 45mg of Campesterol, Beta-sitosterol, Stigmasterol, Sitostanol and Brassicasterol.

Does it Work?:
Sterols are an important part of maintaining proper prostate health, and Prostanol contains five different types of sterols, upping its effectiveness significantly. According to eMedTV, sterols may reduce symptoms of prostate enlargement, such as urinary pain, prostate inflammation or poor bladder emptying. The American Heart Association also says it significantly reduces the risk of heart disease, which also affects aging men.

Beta-sitosterol may also prevent prostate problems, according to Drugs.com. Studies show beta-sitosterol inhibits the progression of colon and prostate cancer, along with a variety of other cancerous tumors. Other studies show it helps treat many symptoms related to benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), which enlarges and irritates the prostate gland. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may reduce inflammation caused by benign prostatic hypertrophy.

But Prostanol is missing one key ingredient—Saw Palmetto. Sterols don't work as effectively if it's missing this key ingredient, which helps treat most symptoms of prostate enlargement and inflammation. It's a key component of all effective prostate supplements, something that isn't included in Prostanol.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. None of the ingredients have any significant side effects and interact safely with most medications.

Grade: B
Prostanol contains a variety of sterols that improve prostate health, but misses one key ingredient—Saw Palmetto. Its easy-to-swallow gel capsules go to work faster than other prostate supplements, however, and won't cause your body to go into a sick tail spin from too potent ingredients. This is a safe, more easily digestible alternative with a sterol-rich base medically approved to treat prostate problems.

4-Way Prostate

Although 4 Way Prostatebelieves urinary problems are caused by an enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hypertrophy(BPH), they don't believe it is caused by excess DHT production. Instead, they believe blood stagnation and the accumulation of damp heat in the urinary bladders causes these symptoms. To combat this buildup, they recommend taking their supplement twice daily, which is chocked full of natural herbs, vitamins and extracts aimed to improve the environment inside the bladder.

Ingredients:
4 Way Prostate contains vitamin E, vitamin B6, zinc, selenium, organic spirulina, saw palmetto (45% standardized extract), beta-sitosterol, l-alanine/glycine/glutamin acid blend, organic barley grass juice, amber, astragalus root, baswellia serrate, myrrh gum, prunus persica seed, eleuthero root, red peony root, coix seed, rehmannia root, poria cocus herb, cornus fruit, paeonia moutan root, alisma root, wild yam root, dong quai root, cinnamon bark, phellodendron bark, vaccaria segetalis seed, achyranthes root, ginger, organic oat grass juice and bioperine.

Does it Work?:
Probably not. Although it contains saw palmetto, an extract proven to treat urinary symptoms caused by BPH, 4 Way Prostate contains a standardized extract that only contain 45% of the active ingredient. This may limit its efficacy against BPH. Vitamin E, which was reported to reduce the risk for prostate cancer by some health companies, has not been shown to reduce the risk for prostate cancer in any recent studies. All of its other ingredients are new to the alternative health market and have not been tested for efficacy or safety.

Is it Safe?:
No. Eleuthero root, better known as Siberian ginseng, can cause insomnia or low blood pressure. Phellodendron bark can also cause stomach upset, spleen problems, vomiting or nausea. People taking blood pressure medications, who suffer from insomnia, or have a history of stomach or spleen problems should speak with a physician before using 4 Way Prostate.

Grade: C
4 Way Prostate's ingredients aren't very effective--their effects are only minimal on prostate health, and may not reduce BPH symptoms. Some of its ingredients may also cause stomach, spleen or blood pressure problems, making it potentially dangerous for people suffering from these conditions.

Antiiva

This is a classic example of a prostate product that is completely worthless and tarnishes the reputation of the entire natural health industry. Sold only through mail-orders by the same group of “weasels” who sell Prosta-8 and Prostend (see sections below write ups). They try to trick you into believing this is a legitimate prostate product by using pseudo science, phony testimonials and a “pharmaceutical-sounding” name like Antiiva. It’s not. The lab reports expose this fraudulent product for what it is: a rip-off. If you were unfortunate enough to spend money on this "bottle of dirt" you would not have seen any results. Total scam. If you get a letter in the mail from these jokers throw it in the trash!

This all-natural prostate supplement claims to naturally improve urinary and prostate problems caused by benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), a condition that swells the prostate gland. Utilizing the power of beta-sitosterol, Antiiva says it rejuvenates blood flow in the groin area, pumping fresher, younger blood into the prostate—a key component of prostate health. They also include a secret proprietary blend they claim improves the efficacy of their ingredients, dramatically reducing prostate problems. It's also fairly cheap—one 60 capsule bottle only costs $19.95.

Ingredients:
Antiiva contains numerous sterols, including beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol and brassicasterol. You'll also find plenty of pumpkin seed oil, zinc citrate and cancer-fighting selenium.

Does it Work?:
Probably not. Although beta-sitosterol is considered an effective treatment for BPH, studies show it isn't as effective if used without Saw Palmetto, a potent berry extract. Beta-sitosterol enhances the effects of Saw Palmetto—not the other way around. Most of the other sterols also enhance the prostate-boosting effects of Saw Palmetto; sterols are essentially useless without this key ingredient.

As for pumpkin seed oil, there is no proof it may be a viable treatment for BPH or any prostate problem. Although scientists are currently testing its for its ability to fight prostate cancer, all of it is speculation—not solid, undeniable proof it may treat prostate cancer. The same goes for zinc citrate, which is currently being studied for its ability to prevent prostate cancer.

Is it Safe?:
No. Extracted beta-sitosterol—that is, beta-sitosterol not found naturally in other ingredients—may cause numerous health problems, including nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, heartburn or constipation. eMedTV.com also says it may cause erectile dysfunction, reducing a man's fertility. Some men also experience a decreased sex drive, making erectile dysfunction worse.

Grade: F
Antiiva may be cheap, but so are its ingredients, which could cause some sexual health problems if used daily. There's also not enough evidence it may reduce a man's risk for prostate cancer, although scientists believe it may be a potential solution. There's simply not not evidence proving Antiiva is an effective prostate supplement, earning it an F on our list.

Best Prostate

With all the hype on the Best Prostate website, we had extremely high expectations that it would be one of the best formulas on the market. We were saddened by the results. Best Prostate has a chart on their website comparing their formula to other beta-sitosterol intensive products. These comparisons’ are apparently just based upon label claims, because in the unbiased lab reports – where it really counts – Super Beta Prostate, literally destroyed Best Prostate. While Best Prostate posted a nice 230mg of phytosterols, Super Beta Prostate scored a 1,040mg! That’s five times stronger. An in the free fatty acid category Best Prostate score a very poor 0.661 – that’s less than 1mg! This lab test is a perfect example of how advertising claims and supplement facts claims don’t always tell the entire story. At the end of the day Best Prostate is still an average product because of the 230mg of phytosterols, but just not an elite or super elite formula.

Made famous in Vitamin Retailer Magazine, Best Prostate is a natural prostate supplement that claims to treat problems caused by an enlarged prostate, including weak urinary stream, frequent urination and decreased sexual function. To boost prostate health, it includes over 300mg of beta-sitosterol, a sterol found naturally in the leaves of the saw palmetto plant. It's also a suitable supplement for vegans who need an extra boost in prostate health--for all of its ingredients are vegetarian-friendly.

Ingredients:
Best Prostate contains beta-sitosterol, zinc and selenium.

Does it Work?:
We aren't sure. Beta-sitosterol does play an important role in prostate health--it's a common European treatment for prostate enlargement--but many studies reveal it's only effective when combined with saw palmetto. Best Prostate does not contain any traces of saw palmetto, although it contains more than the recommended amount for beta-sitosterol. But according to a national study reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, zinc may play a role in prostate health. The study, which was conducted on around 47,000 American men, showed zinc supplementation under 100 mg per day decreased their risk for prostate cancer. There is no evidence it decreased any of the problems indicated on Best Prostate's website, however, including weak urinary stream or sexual dysfunction. Further evidence on selenium's efficacy is also very limited.

Is it Safe?:
Best Prostate contains an excessive amount of beta-sitosterol, which can cause nausea, upset stomach and constipation. Ironically, overuse of beta-sitosterol also causes erectile dysfunction, a common sexual problem primarily affecting middle-aged men.

Grade: C
Best Prostate may claim to improve prostate health, but research shows its ingredients probably won't have a substantial impact on prostate or sexual health. To make matters worse, it may also cause sexual problems, such as impotence.

Betarol

Betarol is an all-natural dietary supplement that claims to promote prostate health by inhibiting the one enzyme that attacks the prostate gland, which they have remained mum about. It contains all of the markers of a decent prostate supplement, including plenty of saw palmetto, pumpkin seed oil and zinc. These supposedly go to work quickly to reduce prostate inflammation, improve erectile strength, and reduce urinary problems caused by prostate enlargement. It also contains selenium, which is reported to reduce a man's risk for prostate cancer—one of the most diagnosed cancers currently in the United States.

Ingredients:
Betarol contains beta-sitosterol, pygeum africanum, saw palmetto, isoflacones, selenium, zinc and pumpkin seed oil.

Does it Work?:
Maybe. According to a 2009 study reported in the Journal of Urology, saw palmetto significantly reduced symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, which mostly included urinary difficulty. Although some scientists believe it may be as effective as prescription drugs, they aren't calling it a cure just yet. But the results are promising.

Selenium, another ingredient reported to reduce the risk for prostate cancer, may not be as effective. According to a study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), men who took selenium for up to six months did not see a significant decrease in symptoms leading to prostate cancer. The current consensus is selenium doesn't help reduce prostate cancer or any non-cancerous symptoms, such as prostate inflammation or pain. Good news, though: it's not likely to cause any dangerous side effects, unlike in common prostate prescription drugs.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. No side effects are associated with most of its ingredients. Be careful with your dietary zinc intake when taking Betarol. You can easily overdose on zinc, causing serious complications. Complications associated with a zinc overdose include corrosion of the stomach lining and interference with copper and iron absorption.

Grade: C
Although there is proof Betarol may reduce the symptoms associated with prostate inflammation, there's no evidence it improves erectile strength or helps reduce the size of the prostate. It's a big-name product with average results, earning it a C on our list.

Better Prostate

This 17-ingredient product contains very low levels of important compounds. It also contains an herb called “Butchers Broom” which has no scientific studies validating it as being beneficial for prostate health. The lone bright spot in the formula is the 85% to 95% free fatty acid content of the Saw Palmetto used. Unfortunately it only contains 50mg. Manufactured by Trim International, a company more known for making women’s beauty supplements, than men’s products. Average lab results, and a $69 a month price tag don’t add up to a winner. Better Prostate is available at www.triminternational.com

This vegetarian-friendly product claims to prevent prostate enlargement and urinary tract infections through the power of all-natural herbs and minerals, including Saw Palmetto, ginseng, milk thistle and calcium. But these aren't the only benefits—Better Prostate also touts itself as an energy and cellular health supplement.

Ingredients:
Better Prostate's biggest ingredients include chromium, selenium, calcium, magnesium citrate, potassium, molybdenum and vanadyl sulfate. It also contains only 4mg of ginseng and 50mg of Saw Palmetto.

Does it Work?:
Getting plenty of calcium, potassium and selenium every day is essential for maintaining total body health, but they don't specifically improve prostate health—something that Saw Palmetto can improve. But how? According to some studies, Saw Palmetto reduced prostate enlargement, improved urinary flow, reduced infections and generally improved prostate health, though it was not clear how it worked. These studies used at least twice as much Saw Palmetto compared to Better Prostate, however, suggesting it may not be as effective.

But the real problem here is chromium, which has few benefits but plenty of complications to share.

The use of Saw Palmetto is a plus—studies show it may decrease prostate enlargement and promote prostate health. But this comes at a price, namely the use of chromium. Chromium is linked to a myriad of side effects, which include organ or genetic damage, and has been linked to organ failure and death. If you want to take Better Prostate, do it with extreme caution—it may compromise the health of your kidneys or liver.

As reported on the National Institutes of Health's website, both saw palmetto and pygeum extract contain strong anti-BPH properties, and may decrease prostate size and urinary problems. It's currently being studied as a possible alternative treatment for BPH.

Comprehensive Prostate Formula's other ingredients have not been shown to affect prostate function, however. Although it may contain some anti-cancer properties, which may prevent the spread of prostate cancer, it has not been shown to have any effect on the prostate's size or ability to function properly. Some ingredients may also increase the risk for prostate cancer, including vitamin E and lycopene.

Is it Safe?:
Yes, aside from some mild side effects. Pygeum extract may cause mild to moderate stomach upset, vomiting and nausea. Vitamin E and lycopene can also increase a man's risk for prostate cancer.

Although saw palmetto and pygeum extract can help reduce symptoms of BPH, a common prostate dysfunction, many of its other ingredients have not been proven to promote prostate function.

Flotrexx

A blatant attempt to confuse the consumer into thinking that this is the prescription drug Flomax. Ads for this low-grade product first appeared right as Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, got approval from the FDA to sell Flomax. Lab results actually showed the supplement had an above average level of saw palmetto, but not much else. This product is advertised through direct mail. They feature photos of a man identified as Dr. Treadwell Dubois. There is no listing for a Dr. Treadwell Dubois in ANY American Medical Association anywhere in the United States. We believe this doctor is as bogus as this product. Plus, at $79 a bottle for a one-month supply this is just not worth it. We just got this lab result in and havent been able to post it yet. Check back soon.

Recommended by Dr. Treadwell Dubois M.D., a prostate health expert, this direct mail prostate supplement claims to improve prostate health through the power of Saw Palmetto, a berry extract. It also claims to be all-natural, with no stimulants, additives or synthetic drugs used to up its efficacy. It doesn't specifically state what exactly it improves, though—higher quality supplements usually specify which prostate conditions they can treat, such as prostatitis or benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), but Flotrexx really isn't specific about any of their claims. Still, Flotrexx may be somewhat effective at treating some prostate issues.

Ingredients:
It's not clear, but it appears Flotrexx only contains Saw Palmetto.

Does it Work?:
Probably not. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Saw Palmetto is an effective treatment for BPH, which causes prostate inflammation and urinary problems. It's also as effective as the prescription medication Proscar, but without its sexual side effects. This also makes it a more viable treatment for men who are at risk for erectile dysfunction (ED), a common sexual dysfunction disorder. But what really makes Saw Palmetto effective is the amount of sterols it contains, which improves its efficacy. Top prostate supplements almost always use high quality Saw Palmetto—but this isn't the case for Flotrexx. According to our lab results, it did not contain many sterols, scoring significantly lower than our top prostate supplements, Vasotrexx and Prostavar. The quality of their Saw Palmetto isn't terrible, but it isn't the type of quality you'll see in more reputable prostate supplements.

Bottom line: It probably won't improve the health of your prostate. There is evidence it may reduce symptoms related to BPH, but it may not work as well as other prostate supplements.

Is it Safe?:
Yes.There are no contraindications or significant side effects associated with Saw Palmetto. It's relatively safe to take and does not interfere with any medications, even medications that treat BPH.

Golden Lion

Unlike other prostate supplements, Golden Lion doesn't just claim to improve prostate and urinary function--it also claims to reduce erectile dysfunction (ED), a common sexual dysfunction disorder for men over 50. They call this the "prowess" factor, which supposedly renews the sexual processes that wear down as men age. Although it doesn't contain saw palmetto, a common prostate supplement ingredient, it contains plenty of other natural ingredients, including ginseng and fenugreek seed.

Ingredients:
Golden Lion contains fenugreek seed, parsley, ginseng, oats and zinc.

Does it Work?:
Maybe--but don't expect any benefits from fenugreek or parsley, two of its key ingredients. Fenugreek and parsley have not been shown to affect any of the sexual or prostatic processes in any men. To make matters worse, parsley has enema-like properties, which can quicken bowel movements.

Some evidence suggests ginseng may improve sexual performance and desire, however. According to one study conducted by the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, laboratory animals who took ginseng regularly were able to have more frequent erections and engaged in more mating rituals, suggesting it may be an effective treatment for ED. They believe the chemicals found in ginseng stimulate the penile tissues, making it easier to produce--and maintain--an erection. This coincides with Golden Lion's claims that it can reduce ED.

None of these ingredients have been proven to improve prostate or urinary function, however. Although zinc may reduce a man's risk for prostate cancer, it has no effect on prostate or urinary dysfunction. The same applies to its other ingredients, including oat bran.

Is it Safe?:
No--parsley is known to trigger sudden bowel movements. Ginseng can also cause nausea, diarrhea, rapid changes in blood pressure and headaches. It can also trigger mania-like symptoms in men who take it with antidepressants.

Grade: C
None of Golden Lion's ingredients have been proven to improve prostate or urinary function, but there is evidence it can help treat ED, a common sexual disorder. The staggering number of side effects associated with Golden Lion's ingredients can be potentially dangerous for some men, especially those who are currently on antidepressants.

Grandma's Herbs Prostate

It's easy to get lured into the promise that Grandma's Herbs Prostate can help reduce common prostate and urinary problems safely, without the risk of unwanted, painful side effects. It claims to promote prostate health naturally, working just as effectively as other over-the-counter drugs.

But Grandma's Herbs Prostate is unlike any other supplement around, containing a saw palmetto-rich formula infused with corn silk extract.

"It is known to support the bladder and kidneys, and helps the liver and intestines as well," claims their website.

But this is hardly believable. These claims are based on hundreds of years of anecdotal evidence, not excerpts from nationally-funded studies.

Ingredients:
Grandma's Herbs Prostate contains a proprietary blend of corn silk, saw palmetto, parsley leaf, marshmallow, buchu, echinacea, pumpkin seed, uva ursi and dandelion.

Does it Work?:
Yes. But not very effectively. Although corn silk has been used as a treatment for bladder inflammation and urinary tract infections, there isn't even anecdotal evidence available about its efficacy against prostate enlargement or inflammation. Healthline.com also claims corn silk helps treat kidney stones in adults, although they don't list any studies proving if this is factually accurate.

Saw palmetto may help reduce urinary symptoms caused by prostate inflammation, however. According to a study published in the Journal of Urology, men who took saw palmetto for up to six months saw a drastic improvement in urinary problems compared to a placebo. It didn't help reduce actual prostate inflammation, however.

Is it Safe?:
Mostly. Although some people are allergic to corn, all of Grandma's Herbs Prostate ingredients are considered generally safe.

Shoddy anecdotal evidence isn't actual proof that an ingredient works, but the inclusion of saw palmetto may help improve urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate. There are plenty of other prostate supplements more effective than Grandma's Herbs Prostate, however, including Vasotrexx and Prostavar.

Herbal Prostate Complex

If you're looking for a prostate supplement that can help treat benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or swelling of the prostate gland, Herbal Prostate Complex may be the answer. This all-natural prostate supplement claims it has the perfect formula to cure BPH naturally, without the use of harsh stimulant or synthetic ingredients. So what's in the formula? Plenty of saw palmetto and pygeum bark--two ingredients shown to reduce BPH symptoms in numerous studies, promoting prostate health. But there's something different about their formula that makes some experts doubt these claims.

Ingredients:
Herbal Prostate Complex contains saw palmetto berries and seeds, nettle, pumpkin seed, pygeum bark, alisma rhizome, cornus fruit, rehmannia root, dioscorea, cinnamon bark and poria fruit.

Does it Work?:
There isn't enough evidence. Saw palmetto is an effective herbal treatment for BPH: numerous studies confirm its ability to reduce urinary problems. But Herbal Prostate Complex isn't using the entire plant here. Saw palmetto's benefits are found in the entire plant, not just the berries. This may reduce its efficacy against BPH. Although pygeum bark is also identified as a natural treatment for BPH, this is mostly based on anecdotal evidence, with little clinical evidence available about its efficacy or safety. It may treat BPH, but we can't say for sure. The other ingredients in Herbal Prostate Complex do not appear to have any verifiable benefits for the prostate.

Is it Safe?:
Maybe. Most of Herbal Prostate Complex's ingredients are pretty new to the alternative health market and have not been officially tested for safety or contraindications with other drugs. We urge you to seek medical advice before using this prostate supplement, to avoid any serious reactions.

Although saw palmetto can treat BPH, it's important to use the whole plant, not just the berries. Herbal Prostate Complex would be more effective if it used more natural ingredients with an already proven efficacy against BPH, such as quercitin and zinc.

HP8 Herbal Prostate

This saw palmetto-rich dietary formula claims to optimize prostate function naturally by reducing prostate enlargement and inflammation, limiting its pain. Several American physicians have offered their approval of the supplement, although they have not been specifically named. HP8 Herbal Prostate also indicates its efficacy and safety are guaranteed through clinical testing, but hesitate to reveal the name of these studies.

Ingredients:
HP8 Herbal Prostate contains saw palmetto, bromelain, licorice root, grape seed complex (with skin), willow herb leaf and wild rosella calyx.

Does it Work?:
There's a good chance it might. HP8 Herbal Prostate contains a high quality form of saw palmetto that may improve its efficacy against benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. Numerous studies, including a study reported by the Journal of Urology, show saw palmetto is an effective treatment for BPH, even more so than some prescription drugs.

Bromelain, which is harvested from the stems of pineapples, has also been identified as an anti-inflammatory agent. According to the Fundamentals of Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy, bromelain is considered just as powerful as non-prescription pain killers, and may reduce many types of swelling. Although no studies have specifically stated it can reduce prostate inflammation, evidence increasingly suggests that it might. Its pain relieving power is also identified as a potent natural treatment for genital pain, which may also occur with prostate inflammation.

Is it Safe?:
Yes--but men with a pre-existing heart condition, such as heart disease, should seek medical advice before using HP8 Herbal Prostate. Bromelain may increase the heart rate, causing unforeseen complications in some individuals.

Grade: B
HP8 Herbal Prostate contains an ample--and high quality--amount of saw palmetto, which helps improve prostate health by reducing symptoms of prostate enlargement, improving urinary difficulty and prostate pain. Bromelain also offers anti-inflammatory benefits that heightens the effect of saw palmetto. We definitely recommend checking out this prostate supplement if you're not satisfied with your current supplementation routine.

LycoZyme

Like the name suggests, LycoZymecontains only one key ingredient: lycopene, a tomato-derived extract. According to LycoZyme, lycopene--not saw palmetto--is the key to maintaining prostate health because of its rich, antioxidant base. To prove its efficacy, they cite a unnamed study showing men who consumed a high amount of tomato-based products had the lowest rates of prostate cancer. LycoZyme's manufacturer, Olympian Labs, also guarantees it will work within 30 days--or you get your money back.

Ingredients:
LycoZyme contains lycopene extract (5% standardized extract yielding 15mg of pure lycopene) and vegetable enzymes (amylase, cellulase, lipase and protease).

Does it Work?:
It's very unlikely. Although some companies claim lycopene can prevent--and sometimes cure--prostate cancer, no national or worldwide studies confirm this is true. According to a study reported in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, researchers were unable to find a link between lycopene and prostate cancer prevention. Additional studies also confirmed lycopene had little impact on prostate cancer prevention.

The same study also revealed it may actually promote cancer cell production. Study data, which involved surveying over 28,000 men with no previous history of prostate cancer, revealed lycopene increased their risk for aggressive prostate cancer, a deadly form of prostate cancer. They believe the beta-carotene found in lycopene, a type of antioxidant, may promote cancer cell production, although it isn't clear why.

This impact is magnified by the fact lycopene is LycoZyme's only key ingredient. With no other ingredients used to balance out its impact on the prostate, its effects may be increased.

Is it Safe?:
No. Lycopene can increase a man's risk for aggressive prostate cancer, or prostate cancer that spreads outside of the prostate. Men with a family history of prostate cancer should seek medical advice before using this supplement.

Grade: D
LycoZyme only contains one ingredient for the treatment of prostate cancer, but one study actually reveals it can increase the risk for prostate cancer, not prevent it. It also doesn't contain other ingredients proven to treat common prostate problems, such as saw palmetto or pygeum extract. LycoZyme doesn't earn a D based on its limited formula, however--it earns this D because it is potentially unsafe.

Maximum Prostate

Now under new management and with a recently improved formula, this pill has made its way into the top 10 with a rock solid grade of B. Easily the turn around story of the year, that can be attributed to their commitment to excellence and their interest in their customers. Their score improved across the board in recent lab tests. Customers reports have been positive. Good people with a very good product that can help most men.

Touting itself as "the prostate miracle" for aging men, Maximum Prostate contains 300mg of beta-sitosterol, the active component found in Saw Palmetto. They claim just two pills a day can completely reverse most prostate problems, including difficulty passing urine, frequent urges to urinate, prostate swelling and cancer of the prostate, one of the deadliest cancers affecting American men over age 40. They also claim it cures sexual dysfunction problems, such as impotence or reduced arousal response

Ingredients:
It contains extracted beta-sitosterols, derived from sugar cane pulp. It also contains 15mg of zinc citrate, a form of zinc.

Does it Work?:
Probably not. Although they go on and on about the benefits of beta-sitosterol derived from Saw Palmetto, it doesn't actually contain Saw Palmetto—instead, they use beta-sitosterol extracts taken from the pulp of sugar cane.

And although Maximum Prostate claims it contains plenty of zinc, it doesn't. It only contains 15mg per serving, which doesn't even meet the recommended daily amount (RDA) recommended by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Although studies show zinc can prevent prostate cancer, you'll need to take plenty of zinc, which is definitely more than 15mg per day.

Men's Prostate Complete

Containing all-natural saw palmetto, Men's Prostate Complete is a liquid dietary formula that claims to promote prostate health naturally, without using harsh stimulants or chemicals. It calls itself the ideal product for delivering "superior nutritional support" to the prostate. Many experts consider its all-liquid formula its best selling point--unlike other supplements, you won't have to swallow several pills a day to get the full effects of this supplement.

Ingredients:
Men's Prostate Complete contains vitamin E, vitamin B6, folic acid, zinc, selenium, copper, quercitin, saw palmetto berry, l-alanine, l-glutamic acid, l-glycine, pumpkin seed extract, pygeum bark extract, stinging nettles extract, beta-sitosterol, lycopene extract and boron.

Does it Work?:
It may. Saw palmetto berry and pygeum bark extract have both been identified as effective treatments for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. According to a study reported by the Journal of Urology, over 80 percent of men who took saw palmetto noticed a significant decrease in urinary symptoms caused by BPH, including weak stream, incomplete bladder emptying and localized bladder pain. It also decreased nocturnal urination, or an increased urge to urinate while sleeping. According to Life Extension Magazine, pygeum bark reduced symptoms of BPH by inhibiting the reproduction of prostate cells, which can lead to prostate enlargement.

But not all of Men's Prostate Complete's ingredients are proven to treat prostate problems. Although some health companies claim vitamin E and selenium can reduce prostate problems, several studies have proven this isn't true. According to the SELECT trial, conducted by the National Cancer Institute, over 20,000 men who took vitamin E and selenium supplements did not experience a decreased risk for prostate cancer. Follow up studies also showed both ingredients had no effect on any processes in the prostate.

Is it Safe?:
Yes, but there are some contraindications. Quercitin can interfere with the absorption of fluoroquinolone, a type of antibiotic. Pygeum extract can interfere with estrogen drugs, limiting its efficacy.

Grade: C
Men's Prostate Complete only contains a few ingredients that may improve symptoms caused by prostate enlargement, including saw palmetto and pygeum extract. The efficacy of its other ingredients are questionable. The risk of additional contraindications with this supplement earns it a C from us.

PC Care

Short for "Prostate Care," PC Care is Natrol's latest herbal and completely preservative free dietary supplement, used to improve prostate health through several metabolic measures. Completely free of preservatives, sugar or starch, this supplement is also ideal for people with type 2 diabetes: it won't unnecessarily spike blood glucose levels, thus making it safe to take. You're probably familiar with many of PC Care's ingredients, like saw palmetto and licorice extract, which are commonly used.

Ingredients:
PC Care contains a proprietary blend of reishi extract, baikal skullcap extract, rabdosia rubescens extract, isatis indigotica extract, chrysanthemum extract, saw palmetto extract, rye pollen, and licorice extract.

Does it Work?:
Probably not. And here's why. Although it contains one of the most effective ingredients available for treating prostate irregularity, saw palmetto, PC Care is implementing it in a proprietary blend loaded with other extracts and herbs. It's important to note that many companies use proprietary blends to disguise the amount of each ingredient. Our lab tests also confirm it probably doesn't contain enough saw palmetto to improve prostate function. PC Care did not score well in any categories, including the detection of saw palmetto. Bottom line? It probably doesn't contain enough saw palmetto to have any effect on prostate health.

Is it Safe?:
Not entirely. Baikal skullcap is known to cause drowsiness, and men should not take this supplement before driving or operating heavy machinery. This effect is doubled by isatis indigotica, which reportedly causes dizziness.

PC Care doesn't seem like a quality product: many of its ingredients are slapped into a proprietary blend that scored badly in all sections of efficacy. We can't say for sure if it can improve prostate health, but there are definitely more effective prostate supplements available, such as Vasotrexx and Prostavar.

Peenuts

Peenuts is an herbal supplement used to treat prostatitis, a condition that is claimed to lead to prostate cancer. According to a 1997 clinical study conducted on Peenuts, 69% of men reduced nearly all symptoms caused by prostatitis, which it is believed may strongly indicate it can reduce prostate cancer. But the only place to find this study is on the Peenuts Basics website--and they don't give full details of how it was conducted. To make matters worse, most of their formula is made up of vitamins and minerals, not herbs proven to normalize the prostate.

Ingredients:
Peenuts contains vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin B6, zinc, selenium, and a proprietary blend of glycine, l-alanine, glutamic acid, saw palmetto extract, pygeum extract, pumpkin seed, stinging nettle root, echinacea purpurea, garlic and ginkgo biloba.

Does it Work?:
It may be somewhat effective. Zinc has been proven to inhibit the development of prostate cancer in several national studies, including a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Not only is zinc able to prevent cancer cells from multiplying, it also helps destroy cancer-specific proteins, preventing them from growing. It's definitely not a cure for prostate cancer, though. For it doesn't help eliminate any prostate cancer cells.

Although some alternative health practitioners have identified vitamin E and selenium as potential treatments for prostate cancer, no currently existing studies prove they are effective treatments. Many of the ingredients included in Peenuts's proprietary blend are also ineffective: pumpkin seed and garlic are rumored to reduce prostate size, but this is mostly based on anecdotal evidence, not reputable studies.

Is it Safe?:
No. Ginkgo biloba carries an increased risk for stomach cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, heart palpitations and bleeding. People on antidepressants cannot take any supplements containing ginkgo biloba without consulting a doctor first. It can cause unpredictable complications.

Grade: C
Zinc supplementation is key for reducing your risk for prostate cancer, but many prostate supplements already contain this key ingredient. There are certainly more effective--and cheaper--supplements available that beat the effectiveness of this all-natural supplement.

Prosplex

Prosplex is an all-natural dietary supplement used to benign prostatic hypertrophy(BPH), or a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. According to their website, their formula is based on prostate therapy involving the use of saw palmetto, which was shown to reduce mild to moderate symptoms of BPH within a couple of weeks. As expected, Prosplex contains plenty of saw palmetto--it contains nearly 320mg per serving--and common prostate supplement ingredients, including lycopene and pumpkin seed extract.

Ingredients:
Prosplex contains IP-6 (Inositol Hexaphosphate), saw palmetto extract (40% extract), quercitin, lycopene 5% standardized extract, pygeum extract 2.5%, and pumpkin seed.

Does it Work?:
It might. Prosplex contains an important extract called saw palmetto, which has been shown to reduce urinary symptoms caused by BPH in several studies. Saw palmetto is used as an alternative therapy for BPH in most European countries, but its use in the United States is limited due to the popularity of other prescription BPH drugs, such as Proscar. Its ability to fight BPH is proven, however--numerous men reported a decrease in urinary urges and pressure after undergoing saw palmetto therapy.

So what's wrong with Prosplex? The issue here isn't what they use, but the quality of these key ingredients. Their ingredient label shows its saw palmetto extract only contains 40% of the active substance, cutting its efficacy against BPH in half. The same applies to its other ingredients--lycopene only contains 5% of its active substance, and pygeum extract only contains 2.5%. This severely limits Prosplex's overall ability to reduce the symptoms of BPH. It's highly debatable if this supplement will have any impact on prostate health.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. Although saw palmetto can cause stomach upset, this rarely occurs.

Although Prosplex contains several key ingredients shown to improve prostate health, it utilizes poor standardized extracts, which barely contain even half of its active compound. Prosplex may be misleading customers by not mentioning this fact on their website.

Prost Support V-Caps

Prost Support V-Caps is an herbal prostate supplement rich in vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and selenium, which they claim promote prostate health. It supposedly works by pumping the prostate full of antioxidant-rich ingredients, which helps normalize prostate cells and helps keep prostate problems away. Better yet, this supplement is free of any animal extracts, stimulants or sugars, making it safe for diabetics, vegetarians and people with heart or blood problems, such as heart disease.

Ingredients:
Prost Support V-Caps contains vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, selenium, saw palmetto berry extract, tomato extract, capsicum, pygeum bark, pumpkin seed and Maitake Bio-Beta-Glucan.

Does it Work?:
It's debatable. According to a study reported by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), vitamins E and C did not reduce the risk for prostate cancer, despite earlier evidence claiming they could. Compared to a placebo, the effects were negligible, and researchers do not recommend using these vitamins as an alternative method for reducing your risk for prostate cancer.

Pygeum extract, when paired with saw palmetto extract, may reduce urinary problems caused by prostate enlargement, however. They also make the do-nothing products Prostend and Antiiva. Prost-8 touts itself as the number one product in the world for “optimum prostate health”. Strange, since it contains ZERO saw palmetto and ZERO Pygeum, the two absolutely essential compounds for men’s prostate health. Outlandish claims and a subpar product is not the combination you are looking for. Laboratory analysis confirms that a purchase of Prost-8 would be a waste of your money. This all-natural prostate health supplement from Hampshire Laboratories claims to eliminate prostate problems with its eight core ingredients, including beta-sitosterol, zinc citrate and several inflammation-fighting sterols. They call these ingredients their “8 secret weapons”, specially formulated to target the prostate gland. But how? According to Prost-8, it supposedly improves urinary and sexual problems within weeks by reducing the size of the prostate—a leading cause of most prostate and urinary problems, including benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).

Ingredients:
Prost-8 contains a multivitamin complex of extracted beta-sitosterols, campesterols, stigmasterols and brassicasterols. It also contains zinc citrate and pumpkin seed oil. Prost-8 promises these are the best ingredients for improving your prostate health fast, without the risk of additional side effects.

Does it Work?:
Probably not. Prost-8 is missing one key ingredient that makes these sterols useful: Saw Palmetto. Saw Palmetto is the driving force that allows these sterols to reduce prostate inflammation in the first place. If that's not enough to surprise you, this will—extracted beto-sitosterol also increases a man's risk for erectile dysfuction (ED) and poor libido. Prost-8 may actually cause sexual problems instead of curing it, something most men don't need.

There is also no reputable evidence available that states pumpkin seed oil may improve prostate health. There's plenty of evidence from health companies trying to sell pumpkin seed oil, though, including WHFoods.org—they claim it treats BPH but doesn't explain why (or how). The lack of evidence suggests Prost-8 probably isn't telling the whole truth about their supplement.

Is it Safe?:
No. Extracted beto-sitosterol may increase a man's risk for ED or lowered libido, impairing numerous sexual functions. Other studies also show beto-sitosterol causes nausea, diarrhea and constipation.

Grade: F
They're certainly not running short on sterols, but it's useless if you don't pair it with Saw Palmetto, which enables it to shrink the prostate. Other ingredients may also worsen sexual dysfunction, doing the opposite of what Prost-8 claims it can cure. Prost-8 earns an F from us for not containing ineffective and potentially dangerous ingredients.

Prosta Logic

This all-natural prostate supplement claims it can treat a common prostate problem called benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), which causes the prostate to enlarge. Dr. James Balch, a nationally-recognized board certified urologist, developed Prosta Logic based on scientific evidence compiled on effective BPH treatments. As expected, Prosta Logic contains saw palmetto, a natural BPH extract used in countless prostate supplements to reduce mild to moderate BPH symptoms.

It could. Numerous studies conducted on saw palmetto show it effectively reduced urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, including increased urinary urgency, urinary pain, and an increase in nocturnal urination. Many researchers compare its effects to Proscar,a FDA-approved BPH medication. It has even earned an A for efficacy from the National Institutes of Health, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Our lab results also reveal Prosta Logic contains a high quality form of saw palmetto, which may heighten its effectiveness against BPH.

Zinc may also play a key role in prostate cancer prevention. According to a study reported in Science Daily, men who had a significant amount of zinc in their prostate decreased their risk for prostate cancer formation, acting a natural protective barrier for prostate cells. Although scientists aren't specifically saying it may prevent or treat prostate cancer, the evidence is compelling.

Is it Safe?:
Not entirely. Pygeum extract reportedly causes gastrointestinal (GI) irritation in some patients. Beeswax can also trigger allergic reactions. Men with GI issues are urged to speak to a physician prior to use.

Like the name suggests, Prosta Palmettocontains only one key ingredient--saw palmetto. Although they won't specifically name the studies on their website, they claim to use the actual amount of saw palmetto used in recent trials studying its efficacy. But evidence from other sources, namely research studies, seem pretty compelling: saw palmetto has been proven effective in numerous studies, although it isn't clear why it works.

Ingredients:
Prosta Palmetto contains saw palmetto berry extract (yielding 85-95% fatty acids and sterols).

Does it Work?:
It may. Prosta Palmetto contains nearly 320mg of saw palmetto, and evidence suggests this is a high quality extract. Numerous studies show it may be an effective treatment for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. Take the study reported in Advances in Therapy, for example--their test results showed men with BPH experienced a reduction in symptoms, including painful or incomplete bladder emptying. Some men also experienced a reduction in prostate size, although followup studies refuted these results.

Many health practitioners don't recommend using saw palmetto alone to improve prostate health, however. They recommend pairing it with other ingredients that enhance saw palmetto's effects, such as pygeum extract, quercitin and beta-sitosterol. Men who use supplements containing these ingredients experience less prostate problems compared to men who only take saw palmetto. Although saw palmetto is an effective ingredient, it should never be used alone as a cure all--it's rarely more effective than a blend of herbal ingredients.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. Although saw palmetto can cause stomach upset, this is a rarely reported effect.

Saw palmetto is proven effective for the treatment of some prostate problems, but using this alone isn't an effective way to improve the health of the prostate. Using other key ingredients, such as quercitin or pygeum extract, may also help. Prosta Response is a natural dietary supplement that claims to improve prostate health by regulating hormonal production in the prostate, thus reducing a man's risk for prostate inflammation. Containing two vital ingredients important for maintaining prostate health, saw palmetto and beta-sitosterol, Prosta Response also claims it reduces a man's risk for abnormal cell production, which may lead to prostate cancer. Its all-natural formula is rich in naturally-derived soy, an environmentally-safe ingredient.

Ingredients:
Prosta Response contains vitamin C, vitamin D3, vitamin E, zinc, selenium, copper, sodium, isoflavone-rich soybean powder, saw palmetto extract, quercitin, l-alanine, l-glutamic acid, glycine, Swedish flower pollen extract, phytosterol complex, stinging nettle root extract, marshmallow root, pumpkin seed oil extract, pygeum bark extract, red clover tops extract, ginkgo leaf extract, uva ursi leaf, goldenseal root, gravel root, green tea extract, ginger root, grape seed extract and lycopene.

Does it Work?:
To an extent, yes. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), numerous studies have shown saw palmetto decreases urinary difficulty caused by prostate inflammation, including incontinence, weak stream, urinary pain and frequent urges to urinate. Researchers also discovered it was more effective when it contained between 80 to 90 percent of the actual extract; however, its not clear how much of Prosta Response's saw palmetto is extract-based.

Vitamins may also play an important role in cellular health. According to WebMD, vitamins C and E are rich in a chemical called an antioxidant, which protects cells from free radical damage. Free radical damage can cause cells to become abnormal, which may lead to cancer. But this isn't necessarily based on hard science. This is just a hypothesis made by the scientific community, as antioxidants haven't been shown to be the best method for preventing cancer.

Is it Safe?:
Not if you have a soy allergy. Prosta Response contains one gram of soybean powder, which can trigger allergic symptoms in soy allergy sufferers. Signs of an allergic reaction include hives, tingling in the mouth or throat, and difficulty breathing.

Grade: C
Prosta Response provides the proper support for reducing prostate inflammation, but there isn't enough evidence it can protect people from prostate cancer, which they claim to protect against. It also contains soy, which can cause allergic reactions in some men.

Prosta-Sentials

This extract-enhanced prostate supplement claims to treat urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate, better known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Although they don't offer any proof for these claims, they promise it is effective and safe for daily use. They claim this supplement is ideal for men over 50, who commonly suffer from prostate problems.

Ingredients:
Prosta-Sentials contains vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin B6, folic acid, zinc, saw palmetto, green tea extract, pumpkin seed oil powder, alpha lipoic acid, beta-sitosterol, stinging nettled leaf extract, pygeum africanum, lycopene and resveratrol.

Does it Work?:
Some evidence suggests it could. According to an article published in American Family Physician, saw palmetto has been used successfully to treat BPH in several European countries, and is currently being reviewed by American researchers. Studies conducted on saw palmetto show regular use can reduce mild to moderate symptoms of BPH, such as weak stream, incomplete emptying and incontinence. Some studies also suggest it can reduce nocturnal urination, or an increased need to urinate during the night.

Many health organizations, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), also recommend pairing saw palmetto with other natural boosters, such as pygeum africanum, to increase these benefits. Although researchers won't call it a natural cure for BPH, they do say it may be just as effective as some FDA-approved BPH medications.

But not all of its ingredients are proven to work, according to the NIH. Pumpkin seed oil, lycopene and vitamin E have not been proven to promote prostate function in any studies, and that includes nationally-funded studies. Most of its reported effects come from anecdotal evidence, not actual clinical trials.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. Pygeum africanum can cause nausea, stomach upset, or vomiting, however.

Prosta-Sentials contains a few natural, effective ingredients that may treat BPH, a common prostate disorder. This doesn't mean it's completely effective for all prostate problems, however--many of its other ingredients have little to no effect on the prostate.

According to their research, their liquid gel capsules go to work quickly on the prostate, reducing prostate inflammation, improving urine flow, and protecting cells from free radical damage, a leading cause of cancer. For $13.09 per 90-count bottle, there's certainly no arguing with its price: its one of the cheapest prostate supplements currently available today.

Ingredients:
Prosta Strong contains zinc, saw palmetto extract, quercitin, rye pollen extract, stinging nettle extract, pygeum africanum extract, beta-sitosterol, green tea leaf extract, lycopene, pumpkin seed extract, bioperine complex, bioperine piperine extract, piper longum extract and ginger root extract.

Does it Work?:
Possibly. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCAM), several studies show saw palmetto may treat symptoms associated with BPH, mostly confined to its effects on urination regularity. One study showed over 80 percent of men who took saw palmetto on a regular basis experienced an improvement in urinary flow, emptying and nocturnal urination. Unfortunately, NCAM also points out saw palmetto did not reduce the actual size of the prostate. To make matters worse, it reportedly causes mild stomach discomfort and breast tenderness, although these side effects are rarely observed in most men.

Scientists also hypothesize zinc may prevent cellular damage due to its high antioxidant content. Although this isn't a proven theory, some studies reveal men who take zinc supplements daily have a decreased risk for prostate cancer. It hasn't been proven this decrease was caused by its antioxidant content, but the theory is generally accepted by the medical community.

Is it Safe?:
It is moderately safe. Although saw palmetto may cause mild stomach discomfort and breast tenderness, it is a rare occurrence.

Grade: C
Saw palmetto and zinc are Prosta Strong's strongest ingredients, with a proven ability to improve the health of the prostate. If you're looking for a solid cure for BPH symptoms, however, this isn't the right prostate supplement for you. It's only been proven to moderately improve some BPH symptoms, with a questionable efficacy against prostate cancer.

Prostacet

Prostacet is a dietary supplement that promotes a healthy prostate by reducing prostate inflammation and free radical damage, which can lead to prostate cancer. Although it won't say if it can prevent prostate cancer, it does claim to be a powerful supplement for all aspects of prostate health, which also encompasses prostate cancer. It also claims to improve urinary flow, which can be affected by an enlarged prostate, known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).

Ingredients:
Prostacet contains zinc chelate, vitamin E, selenium and beta carotene. It also contains a small proprietary mixture consisting of saw palmetto extract, lycopene extract, corn silk powder, and other herbs and extracts.

Does it Work?:
According to a study conducted by the National Cancer Institute, men who took up to 100mg of zinc per day significantly reduced their prostate cancer risk. Another study conducted by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) also confirms this. And their study revealed that zinc reduced the level of proteins found in prostate cancer cells, inhibiting its reproduction. But the results aren't all positive: other studies show taking too much, or over 100mg, of zinc per day can increase the risk for prostate cancer.

Vitamin E and selenium are also thought to be effective agents against the spread of prostate cancer, but a recent study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) showed both ingredients had no effect on prostate cancer. Called the SELECT trial, the researchers had 35,000 men take vitamin E and selenium supplements daily, testing them for any decreased signs of prostate cancer. The results were similar to a placebo, proving it had no effect on a man's prostate cancer risk.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. Take Prostacet as prescribed to avoid any additional side effects. Overdosing can cause unpleasant digestive side effects.

Grade: B
Protecting yourself from prostate cancer is just as important as reducing your risk for BPH, and Prostacet contains one key ingredient that may enable that. There are far more effective prostate supplements available, however, including Vasotrexx.

ProstActin

Like most prostate supplements, ProstActin is all-natural, with a rich vitamin complex infused into its formula to support prostate health. But the focus here isn't on zinc or saw palmetto. Instead, ProstActin focuses on loading its formula with vitamin E, which they claim provides continual protection against factors that could compromise the health of the prostate. It's not exactly budget-friendly prostate fanfare, though. Expect to spend around $30.00 for a decent sized bottle.

Ingredients:
ProstActin contains glycine, alanine, lycopene, vitamin E, zinc, prosterol, glutamine, turmeric, pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto.

Does it Work?:
Maybe. According to a study reported by WebMD.com, men who took at least 50 milligrams of alpha tocopherol, a type of vitamin E, everyday reduced their prostate cancer risk by 30 to 40 percent. Researchers also noted that men with the lowest risk took vitamin E supplements. They didn't consume it from diet alone. But researchers are mum about its effects on non-cancerous prostate problems: no studies have shown it may be effective for the treatment of prostate enlargement, better known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).

Strangely enough, the effects of zinc on the prostate are almost identical. According to one study, men who took less than 100 milligrams of zinc every day significantly reduced their prostate cancer risk. The same issue that affected vitamin E also affects zinc too: zinc supplementation had no effect on non-cancerous prostate problems, much to the dismay of zinc supporters.

Although ProstActin also contains saw palmetto, it's too miniscule to have any substantial impact on the prostate. As mentioned in previous reviews, saw palmetto is considered an effective treatment for BPH and is definitely a "must have" if you want to improve the health of your prostate.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. All of its ingredients are considered safe for everyday use.

None of ProstActin's ingredients have been proven to prevent non-cancerous prostate problems, which is a major concern for most men. Although reducing your risk for prostate cancer is just as important, ProstActin's ingredients aren't ideal for all aspects of prostate health, which includes the reduction of BPH symptoms. GeroVita had sold over 4 millions of bottles of this prostate supplement which failed miserably in lab testing. In fact is looks like a classic example of "powder in a bottle" with virtually zero potency! A rip off! Priced under $40 a bottle it is a complete waste of money based on the independent laboratory analysis. Many survey sheet complained the pills did nothing for them - now we know why. Company founder and creator of this supplement Almon Glen Brasswell gained national attention a few years ago when he, along with financier Marc Rich, were pardoned by President Clinton in the final days of his presidency. Does it Work?:
It's unlikely. We all know the evidence surrounding prostate-boosting Saw Palmetto, which was identified as a successful treatment for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) in several studies. But what really makes Saw Palmetto effective is the numbers of sterols and free fatty acids it contains, which significantly improves its ability to reduce prostate inflammation and urinary problems.

Our lab tests revealed Prostata contained no detectable traces of sterols or free fatty acids. This essentially means they're using a highly processed form of Saw Palmetto, which almost eliminates its prostate-boosting abilities. To state it simply, it's probably not going to help shrink your prostate.

But what about Vitamin A? Well you're not likely to find help from this vitamin either. Although it does contain antioxidants, which may lower your risk of developing numerous cancers (including prostate cancer), there's no proof it improves prostate or urinary function. There are some studies that identify it as a potent anti-aging agent for skin health, but that's not really the concern of men who desperately want to reduce their prostate cancer risk.

Is it Safe?:
No. Long term use of Prostata may increase your risk for chronic vitamin A toxicity, which typically occurs after 6-15 months of use. According to eMedicine, a WebMD partner, chronic toxicity can lead to osteoporosis, excessive skin peeling or breaking out, blurred vision or pain in the extremities. Acute toxicity, which is less likely to occur, may also cause anorexia, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness or seizures.

Prostata doesn't appear to be an effective product, and our lab tests show it doesn't use a high quality form of Saw Palmetto. You'll easily go over your daily limit of vitamin A, which may put you at a higher risk for developing chronic vitamin A toxicity. These top quality ingredients were evident in the nice laboratory score this product received. While it was off the mark with Quercetin and Icariin, it is still a better than average product. Zinc may also play an important role in prostate health. According to a study conducted by the ARS Western Human Nutrition Research Center in 2005, adequate zinc supplementation suppressed the growth—and multiplication—of cancerous cells found in the prostate. Prostate Health contains zinc, selenium, He Shou Wou extract, saw palmetto, tomato concentrate (lycopene), pumpkin seed concentrate, pygeum bark and isoflavones.

Does it Work?:
It might. Numerous American and European studies report saw palmetto reduces several BPH symptoms, including nocturnal urination. It's not clear how it works, but the active properties found in saw palmetto may help ease urinary urges, reducing frequent urges to urinate during the night. It also helps treat urinary pain caused by BPH.

Pumpkin and tomato concentrate have not been shown to reduce prostate problems, however. Although anecdotal evidence suggests it may treat urinary problems caused by BPH, clinical evidence doesn't support this. It may contain antioxidants, however, which help protect prostate cells from free radical damage (a leading cause of prostate tumors).

Is it Safe?:
No. He Shou Wou is reported to cause rare, but serious, liver problems, which include jaundice and hepatitis. Left untreated, hepatitis can cause liver failure.

Although Prostate Health contains a handful of effective ingredients, it also contains a handful of potentially dangerous and ineffective ingredients, including He Shou Wou. This is an especially dangerous supplement for people who are at risk for liver disease.

Prostate Health Essentials

This all-natural supplement from Senior Life Health claims to help you combat the symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), a condition that enlarges your prostate and makes it difficult to urinate. It claims to do this by shrinking your prostate, reducing the incidence of prostate infections and improving urinary function, which keeps your prostate safe from potential "baddies" that affects its function. They report men typically see results within four to six weeks of use, with some reporting a reduction in symptoms in less than two weeks of use.

Does it Work?:
Yes--many of its ingredients have been shown to reduce BPH symptoms. According to a 2008 study reported in Intervention Review, pygeum africanum moderately improved symptoms caused by BPH, including urinary flow and retention. According to one of the study's researchers, pygeum africanum reduced residual urine volume by 24 percent, nocturia (an increased urge to urinate during the night) by 19 percent, and increased urine emptying by 23 percent. Participants also reported an overall improvement in BPH symptoms by 50 percent.

Several studies, including a recent German study, also show that saw palmetto is very effective for the treatment of urinary-related BPH symptoms. According to the study, 73 percent of men who took saw palmetto experienced a significant decreased in nocturia, with vast improvements in overall urinary symptoms. Some studies also indicate it may shrink the prostate, although the National Institutes of Health (NIH) still says it cannot shrink the prostate. Quercitin dihydrate, zinc and beta-sitosterol have also been shown to have positive effects on the prostate, ranging from a reduction in urniary-related BPH symptoms to a reduction in prostate cancer risk.

Is it Safe?:
Yes, but use caution if you have a soy allergy. Beta-sitosterol is derived from soy, and may cause severe allergic reactions, such as hives, throat or lip swelling and heart pain.

Many of Prostate Health Essentials's ingredients have been clinically proven to reduce symptoms caused by BPH, although they won't actually cure BPH itself. Still, if you're looking for a natural supplement that can relieve some of your BPH symptoms, Prostate Health Essentials may be an option for you.

Prostate Magic

While most supplements are emphasizing the benefits of saw palmetto and zinc, two ingredients shown to reduce prostate abnormalities, Prostate Magic actually claims it doesn't work--in fact, they suggest it may actually worsen the health of your prostate. They also put the blame on excess DHT production, a byproduct of testosterone, which they claim causes prostate problems because it enlarges the prostate, which may increase a man's risk for prostate cancer. Their supplement supposedly slow down DHT production, reducing your risk for prostate cancer.

Ingredients:
Prostate Magic contains achyranthes bidentata, alisma plantago, Chinese yam, cinnamon, dogwood tree, he shou wu, plantain, rehmannia glutinosa, tree peony and tuckahoe.

Does it Work?:
No none of its ingredients have ever been shown to reduce a man's prostate cancer risk. Many of Prostate Magic's ingredients have been used as anti-inflammatories and diuretics in traditional Chinese medicine, but there hasn't been a single study conducted on any of its ingredients showing it treats any prostate problem. Prostate Magic also lacks several key ingredients proven to reduce prostate problems, such as saw palmetto (which they claim "doesn't work"), pygeum extract or quercitin. There's clearly no evidence any of its ingredients can reduce your risk for prostate cancer or other prostate problems.

Is it Safe?:
No. One of Prostate Magic's ingredients, he shou wu, may cause severe liver reactions in some people. There have been several reports in the U.K. of abnormal liver function, jaundice and hepatitis after the use of he shou wu. London's health board advises consumers not to take any supplement containing this herb if you have any liver problems.

Prostate Magic likes to tout itself as a miracle pill, but there isn't any proof any of its ingredients help treat any problem related to the prostate. There's also the risk of developing serious liver problems if you take this even for short term use, thanks to he shou wu.

Prostate Nutritional Support

Developed by Dr. Kurt Donsbach, a nationally recognized alternative health practitioner, Prostate Nutritional Support is a herbal supplement that claims to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), a common prostate disorder. Like other prostate supplements, Prostate Nutritional Support's main ingredient is saw palmetto, an extract from the serenoa repens fruit. They recommend taking up to 6 pills per day to treat BPH symptoms.

Ingredients:
Prostate Nutritional Support contain saw palmetto extract, pygeum extract, stinging nettle extract and zinc gluconate.

Does it Work?:
Yes. Prostate Nutritional Support contains a natural form of saw palmetto, which has been shown in several studies to reduce some symptoms of BPH. According to these studies, saw palmetto reduced urinary obstruction and increased nocturnal urination, acting very similarly to the BPH medication Proscar. It did not shrink the size of the prostate, however.

Pygeum bark has also been identified as a treatment for BPH in some clinical trials. According to the studies, which were reported in Life Extension Magazine, pygeum extract inhibited the overgrowth of cells inside the prostate, preventing BPH. It also helped reduce urinary problems caused by BPH, including weak stream, increased nocturnal urination and urinary obstruction.

Other ingredients, including zinc gluconate, also help reduce a man's prostate cancer risk. According to a report publicized by Oregon State University, zinc was shown to inhibit the reproduction of cancer cells inside the prostate, reducing a man's risk for prostate cancer.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. Very few side effects have been reported with any of its ingredients. Saw palmetto may cause some stomach upset.

Prostate PM

Also called Pomology Prostate PM, this pomegranate-based prostate supplement helps promote healthy prostate function and better sleep with its patented blend, called Suntheanine. It is a unique blend that supposedly reduces non-chronic insomnia caused by an enlarged prostate. But that's not all, says Prostate PM: it also contains a rich pomegranate extract, which they claim reduces a man's risk for developing prostate cancer.

Ingredients:
Prostate PM contains vitamin D, phyto sitosterol complex (containing 40-45% beta-sitosterols), pomegranate extract, green tea extract, Suntheanine and cranberry juice powder.

Does it Work?:
Probably not. Although pomegranate juice may slow down the development of prostate cancer--one study published in Clinical Cancer Research shows it cut prostate cancer development in half--no studies have been conducted on pomegranate extracts. These are the only form of pomegranate found in Prostate PM. Prostate PM also only contains 200mg of pomegranate extract. However, the men in the study only drank 8oz, or 226796.185mg of pomegranate juice per day, which is literally a fraction of what you'll find in Prostate PM.

But can Suntheanine help? It probably won't, especially considering Suntheanine is only a patented, pure form of l-theanine, a common amino acid. Although a 2003 study conducted by the Brigham and Women's Hospital shows it improves the immune system, it has little to no impact on all cancers, including prostate cancer. There is also no evidence it helps stop non-chronic insomnia.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. There are no side effects associated with pomegranates, l-theanine, or its other ingredients. It's also free of additives that may cause allergic reactions.

Prostate PM is a safe product, but it's more hype than anything else. None of these ingredients are shown to improve prostate health, including Suntheanine. Prostate PM is not a very effective prostate supplement, and that's proven.

Prostate Power RX

This doctor-created supplement, created by Dr. Ray Sahelian, M.D., claims to support healthy prostate function naturally without the use of chemical additives or ingredients. So what can you expect? Plenty of saw palmetto, stinging nettle and a new ingredient called genistein, an isoflavone. Although Prostate Power Rx won't say if it can treat prostate problems, they do suggest it improves prostate health, improving sexual enhancement.

Ingredients:
Prostate Power Rx contains saw palmetto, stinging nettle, quercitin, a phytosterol complex, pygeum africanum, daidzen, genistein and lycopene.

Does it Work?:
Prostate Power Rx uses a powerful extract called saw palmetto, which was shown in several studies to reduce the symptoms associated with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), better known as prostate enlargement. Studies show it reduces urinary pain, incomplete emptying and straining, helping men return to a normal urinating routine. What it won't reduce is the size of the prostate, though. These studies also concluded it had no effect on prostate inflammation itself.

But what about genistein? Studies also show it has inhibitive effects of prostate cancer, but doesn't actually improve prostate health. No studies show it helps reduce non-cancerous prostate problems, such as BPH. Although Prostate Power Rx's other ingredients are also rich in antioxidants, which are also found in genistein, it isn't likely to improve prostate health.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. There are no side effects or contraindications associated with any of its ingredients, including saw palmetto.

Prostate Power Rx may help reduce the symptoms of BPH, but there's one thing it can't do: improve prostate health. There is also no evidence it can improve sexual function, one of its reported benefits. It's not the best prostate supplement around, but it may be somewhat useful for the treatment of BPH.

Probably. Both Saw Palmetto and pygeum extract are currently considered viable alternative treatments for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or an enlarged prostate, in the European health industry. It's still awaiting approval by the FDA, but early studies show it significantly reduces urinary and prostate pain associated with BPH. It may also reduce prostate inflammation, which causes increased prostate enlargement. There's no evidence supporting its ability to treat prostatitis, however.

As for zinc, numerous studies show it inhibits the formation of prostate cancer cells, and is considered an effective alternative treatment for prostate cancer. It may also reduce a man's risk for developing prostate cancer. But studies on selenium are inconclusive, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)—their latest study revealed selenium was just as effective as placebo in preventing prostate cancer.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. Overuse of zinc may cause anemia or affect good cholesterol levels, but you won't experience this unless you take too many Prostate Relief supplements. Saw Palmetto and pygeum extract also have no known side effects, and are generally considered safe for everyday use.

There's no question it is a potent prostate supplement—studies prove Saw Palmetto is an effective treatment for BPH—but there are plenty of other prostate supplements that contain far more effective ingredients.

This herbal supplement claims to contain nine ingredients proven to improve the health of your prostate, reducing the symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), a common prostate condition for men over 40. It reportedly works by nourishing the body with naturally-derived extracts, which helps reduce inflammation and urinary obstruction--two factors that can worsen BPH. It also claims to preserve the health of your prostate by protecting it from other harmful conditions such as prostatitis or the development of prostate cancer. But its popularity may be a better indicator of its efficacy: more than 140,000 men have used it and approved of it.

Ingredients:
Prostate 9 Complex contains saw palmetto, nettle root, pumpkin seed, selenium, pygeum, zinc, lycopene, iodine and vitamin E.

Does it Work?:
Yes --several of its ingredients have been shown to reduce urinary symptoms caused by BPH. According to a recent clinical trial reported by the American Academy of Family Physicians(AAFP), saw palmetto significantly reduced urinary problems caused by BPH in men between ages 40 to 88 years old. The study points out that the biggest improvement was in nocturia, a term used to describe frequent urges to urinate while sleeping, which saw a 25 percent improvement over placebo. It also helped improve urinary flow and reduce post-void dribbling and urinary retention.

Several studies, which were noted on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) website, also show that pygeum reduces urinary symptoms caused by BPH, namely trouble urinating, nocturia and painful urination. The NIH recently gave pygeum an "A" rating for its efficacy.

Zinc may also offer another benefit--a reduction in your prostate cancer risk. According to a study reported by the University of Oregon, zinc was shown to reduce the replication and size of possibly cancerous prostate cells, suggesting it may reduce the spread of prostate cancer. It may also reduce the spread of prostate cancer cells while the cancer is active.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. Most of the side effects reported were mild. Both saw palmetto and pygeum can cause stomach upset and nausea.

There is substantial evidence here that Prostate 9 Complex can reduce the symptoms of BPH in a safe, controlled manner. There are also low incidences of harmful side effects, suggesting this may be safe for long term use.

ProstatExcell

This vitamin-enhanced supplement claims to support healthy prostate function by delivering antioxidants to the prostate, improving reproductive health. They claim their nutritionally-balanced formula allows it to attack prostate problems at its source, eliminating pain, inflammation or enlargement caused by poor prostate health. Although they won't say what it helps cure, they claim it can improve prostate health within 30 days of use.

Ingredients:
ProstatExcell contains vitamin E, zinc, selenium, phytosterols, beta-sitosterol, saw palmetto extract, pygeum extract, tomato extract and rye extract.

Does it Work?:
It probably won't. Most of the ingredient base is made up of vitamin E and selenium, which have been proven ineffective for improving prostate health. According to a nationwide clinical trial conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), both ingredients did not reduce a man's prostate cancer risk. This included men with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. Follow up studies also indicated both ingredients did not help reduce urinary problems caused by BPH.

Zinc may reduce a man's prostate cancer risk, however. According to a study reported by Science Daily, men with high levels of zinc in their prostate had a decreased risk for prostate cancer, as compared to men who already had prostate cancer. Researchers believe zinc supplementation may prevent cell damage in the prostate, although it isn't clear why. It has not been shown to treat other common prostate problems, such as BPH or prostate inflammation.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. None of ProstatExcell's ingredients have any significant side effects--if used properly. Overuse of ProstatExcell may lead to a zinc overdose.

ProstatExcell may contain all-natural ingredients, but this doesn't necessarily mean it's a more effective prostate supplement. Many of its ingredients have not been proven to improve prostate health, including selenium and vitamin E. Prostazol

Sold by Seacoast Vitamins, Prostazol isn't your typical BPH cure-in-a-bottle. It actually claims to treat prostate cancer by lowering prostate specific antigens (PSA's), a type of protein that increases in quantity when prostate cancer develops. Although the U.S Food and Drug Administration and numerous health organizations may argue the validity of this claim, it is clear it's catching on with men suffering from this life-threatening cancer. It is currently one of the most sought-out products on SeaCoastVitamins.com.

Ingredients:
Prostazol contains magnesium oxide, saw palmetto, sterolin mix, quercitin mix, boron citrate, nattokinase, reishi, pygeum extract, ginger, ginseng and curcuminoid.

Does it Work?:
It's very unlikely. Prostazol is mostly derived from herbs and extracts not clinically proven to have any effect on prostate cancer. And that includes saw palmetto. Although several European and American studies revealed it reduces urinary problems caused by a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, there are no studies showing it has any effect on the spread of cancer inside the prostate gland. The same goes for pygeum extract. Although it may treat urinary problems, there's no evidence it may inhibit cancer cell growth in the prostate.

It's also important to note that no prostate supplement has been proven to treat or cure prostate cancer. Numerous health organizations warn people not to purchase supplements making such claims, as it is always 100% false.

Is it Safe?:
All of its ingredients are considered generally safe. Ginseng may cause some slight insomnia and stomach upset, however.

ProsTec

ProsTec Review – This company's advertising promises much more than what the product actually delivers. This very simple 7-ingredient formula uses ZERO extracts, and consists mostly of powders. The ideal form of these natural compounds would be “extracts” NOT powders. The lab report results for ProsTec were poor. It is distributed by Health Advantage of Carmel, NY . These hard tablets seem very over-priced for the benefits they would deliver. Men who have commented about this product in survey sheets were not very impressed. Their other prostate product T-Pros Ultra also performed poorly. These products are sold over the very “medical-sounding” website – www.healthmd.com, yet the actual benefits you would get using this pills, will be far less than you imagine.

This all-natural—and vitamin rich—prostate health supplement claims to treat prostate inflammation, a leading cause of bladder obstruction in men over 40. It also claims to treat sexual difficulties caused by old age, although it doesn't specify what it treats. To enable this, ProsTec uses a variety of naturally-derived ingredients, including garlic, bee pollen and antioxidant-rich lycopene. Better yet, all of these ingredients are derived from vegan-friendly herbs, plants and fruits. It's likely to be safe, even for diabetics or men with pre-existing heart conditions.

Ingredients:
Prostec contains vitamins A, E, B6, folate and zinc oxide. To improve its efficacy, it also contains Saw Palmetto, pygeum extract, garlic, bee pollen and lycopene.

Does it Work?:
Maybe. Some studies show Saw Palmetto may treat symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, but our lab tests reveal it contains very few sterols, weakening its ability to improve prostate health.

Its vitamin-rich complex isn't likely to improve prostate health either. Vitamins A and B6 have no proven prostate benefits—the same applies to garlic, although it may improve the immune system. As for zinc, a couple of American studies suggest zinc may reduce a man's risk for prostate cancer by inhibiting the growth of cancerous cells. It may also increase cancer remission time, improving survivability. Because of this, some doctors are currently recommending using zinc in place of other natural cancer treatment methods, such as multivitamin supplementation.

Is it Safe?:
Probably. Although zinc overuse can cause anemia or nausea, it's not likely to happen if you use Prostec as directed. There are no side effects associated with Saw Palmetto, pygeum extract or garlic.

Although Saw Palmetto and pygeum extract are very effective treatments for prostate enlargement, our studies reveal these are low quality ingredients which contain few sterols—in other words, it's highly unlikely it will improve prostate health. ProsTec earns a C for being safe but not necessarily effective.

Prostex

his prostate supplement gets high marks for the 310mg of total sterols. While this is an excellent score, the lab results indicate that Prostalex is essentially one dimensional. With zero free fatty acids, Quercetin and Icariin the rest of the formula needs to be beefed-up. We gave Prostalex a grade C.

This 'As Seen on TV' product claims to reverse the effects of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, reducing pressure on the urethra. Containing Saw Palmetto, a sterol-rich plant extract, Prostalex Plus is purely all-natural, claiming to be free of stimulants and synthetic ingredients found in other prostate supplements. Prostol is a dual-action prostate supplement that targets prostate inflammation by loading the body with saw palmetto and nettle extract, two potent inflammation reducers. According to Prostol's manufacturer, this process helps decrease urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate, better known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Its soft gel form ensures these ingredients release into the body faster, providing quicker relief from prostate and urinary problems.

Ingredients:
Prostol contains 160mg of saw palmetto concentrate and 120mg of nettle extract. Other ingredients include gelatin, plant glycerides, glycerine, soybean oil, caramel, titanium dioxide and carmine.

Does it Work?:
It might. According to a 2002 review reported by the American Cancer Society (ACS), saw palmetto helped decrease urinary problems caused by BPH, reducing urinary difficulty and pain. There was also a significant decrease in urinary urges while sleeping, improving the quality of sleep. Some researchers compare its benefits to Proscar, a prescription drug used to treat BPH.

The review also revealed men needed to take an ample amount of saw palmetto, however, or at least 320mg. Prostol contains around half of the recommended dosage to treat BPH. It's not clear if what is used is a saw palmetto extract or powder, either. For concentrates are often used to disguise the fact that it's actually a powdered substance. Condensed powders also often contain less nutrients, thus limiting its efficacy.

Soybean oil may cause an allergic reaction, which can cause hives, throat or mouth swelling, difficulty breathing, and confusion. People with an allergy to soy should avoid taking Prostol.

Prostol may contain saw palmetto, but the concern here is the product doesn't use enough of this potent extract. To make matters worse, what may be used is a cheaper, less-effective powdered substance instead of a pure extract, thus reducing its efficacy against BPH.

Prosvent

Maybe you have seen the half-hour television infomercial for Prosvent featuring UCLA educated physician Dr. Larry May. The show and commercials do a terrific job of reviewing how important it is for men to be proactive in caring for their prostate. Dr. Larry May goes on to explain that to eliminate or at least minimize the chance of developing BPH, men should take his Prosvent pills. Talk about biased!

Prosvent contains all the key ingredients of a good prostate supplement: saw palmetto, pygeum, Vitamin D & E, zinc, selenium and pumpkin seed oil as well as lycopene. We reviewed the laboratory tests with average scores. This supplement was nowhere near the high scores of Prostavar or some of the better prostate supplements.

However, Prosvent is good enough to help some men with mild prostate enlargement or mild BPH. The only complaint about Prosvent is that it costs $79 a bottle. The high price might be necessary because of the high cost of purchasing the TV infomercial spots. Bottom line is this is a decent product.

Rich in antioxidants, herbs and essential vitamins, there's a lot to like about Prosvent—numerous testimonials, solid ingredients and quick-dissolving capsules make it an ideal choice for men over age 40. Like other prostate supplements, Prosvent also makes good use of Saw Palmetto, a sterol-rich extract used to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. But that's not all—they also include zinc, antioxidant-rich extracts, and vitamins D and E to reduce a man's prostate cancer risk. Prosvent is a solid, safe formula that may work, and it definitely has people talking.

Ingredients:
Prosvent contains all of the usual prostate supplement ingredients: Saw Palmetto, pygeum extract, lycopene and selenium. It also contains nettle root extract, vitamin E, vitamin D and the cancer-fighting mineral zinc, which is also rich in antioxidants.

Does it Work?:
Maybe. According to a study reported in the American Journal of Medicine, pygeum extract significantly lowered urological symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, including bloody or painful urination, frequent nocturnal urination and incomplete emptying of the bladder. Another study also showed it reduced all symptoms of prostatitis, a painful inflammation disease, in 89% of participants.

Saw Palmetto also reduced some symptoms of an enlarged prostate, including obstructed urine flow, frequent urges to go and bladder pain. This also reduced some prostate inflammation, improving prostate health.

Early (but inconclusive) studies on lycopene also suggest it may lower the risk for developing many cancers, including breast, cervix, colon and prostate cancer. Some people suggest it specifically lowers prostate cancer, but this isn't true—other studies found that lycopene was about as effective as placebo pills. It's really not clear how lycopene affects the prostate, though it won't cause any harm.

But other vitamins and minerals, including zinc, may reduce a man's risk for developing prostate cancer. Several studies show it inhibits the multiplication of cancerous prostate cells, essentially stopping the cancer from spreading. But it won't cure prostate cancer, and overuse is actually linked to an increased risk of cancer.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. If used correctly, these ingredients won't cause any significant side effects, making it safe for everyday use.

Prosventis effective, but there is not enough evidence its ingredients are more effective than other prostate supplements, such as Prostavar or Vasotrexx. Lycopene is also not proven to reduce a man's prostate cancer risk. Play it safe—use a more effective prostate supplement instead. Prosvent earns a solid C from us.

Yes. If used correctly, these ingredients won't cause any significant side effects, making it safe for everyday use.

Provalex Plus

The suggested daily dosage is to take 3 tablets twice a day – that’s six pills a day. They give you 180 tablets and it appears to be a marketing gimmick. One sign, right off the bat, that this product will come up short is the 50mg's of Pygeum per three tablets are from a powder NOT an extract. It came as no surprise to us when the laboratory analysis revealed below average test scores. Manufactured by Merazon Health Products of Seattle, who received a serious FDA Citation in February 2005 from Office Director Joseph R. Baca for their product Immune Guard after making false claims about its ability to cure the common cold and flu. They were also the subject of an expose on Quackwatch an organization that monitors the natural health industry. Provelex Plus seems like another over-hyped product. Numerous amino acids, extracts and vitamins make up Provelex's proprietary blend—but Provelex Plus claims the real benefits come from its sterol-rich base of beta-sitosterols, stigmasterols and campesterols. They claim sterols help improve the effects of Provelex Plus, improving urinary function, pressure on the bladder, and overall prostate health. But if you want to cash in on these benefits, be prepared to swallow up to six hard capsules per day—nearly twice as much compared to other prostate supplements.

Ingredients:
Provelex contains nearly 700mg of Saw Palmetto Extract, boosted with helpful sterols such as beta-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol. It also contains 400mg of Swedish flower pollen, which they claim improves the health of the prostate gland.

Does it Work?:
It might—but don't count on it. Our lab tests revealed Provelex Plus really doesn't contain a sterol-rich base, earning low scores in the sterol detectability category. This nearly defeats the purpose of using Saw Palmetto in the first place—sterols are what makes it effective in the first place. This strongly suggests they used low quality or highly processed Saw Palmetto, which doesn't do you any good if you want to improve the health of your prostate.

But what about Swedish flower pollen, another ingredient they claim improves prostate health? It may reduce prostate-related inflammation and bladder obstruction, according to Life Extension Magazine. Cernitin, a supplement derived from flower pollen, was shown to reduce symptoms of an enlarged prostate by inhibiting the production of excess testosterone, a leading cause of prostate enlargement. The studies did not investigate the specific properties of Swedish flower pollen, but the results are promising. It won't treat or reduce a man's risk for prostate cancer, however, a leading cause of death for men over 40.

Is it Safe?:
Yes--if you don't have a pollen allergy. People with pollen allergies who are exposed to Provelex Plus may develop hay fever, which causes frequent sneezing, skin itchiness, watery eyes or fatigue. Untreated hay fever may also lead to sinusitis, better known as a sinus inflammation.

The ingredients in Provelex Plus are not high quality, limiting its ability to treat prostate inflammation, pain and enlargement. But there is some evidence that flower pollen may reduce non-cancerous prostate enlargement, providing quick and pain-free urinary relief. Overall, Provelex Plus earns a C- for not containing enough effective ingredients.

Provalex Plus

Prulato

The man who created this prostate product is currently serving 25 years in federal prison for claims he made about the product Enzyte- a supplement that – get this – is supposed to make a mans penis longer! Needless to say, it came as no surprise that Prulato does not live up to its claims and promises. While the packaging and promotions for this product might be the fanciest of any product we have seen – it is completely worthless. All that matters to us and YOU are lab reports and feedback from “real men” using the product. In the case of Prulato the lab results were poor and as for testimonials from men – we couldn’t find any! At $59.95 a month it’s too high for something of this quality. It claims to be the fountain of sexual youth in pill form, with all-natural ingredients such as Swedish flower pollen and Saw Palmetto utilized to improve prostate health. But there's also a lot not to like about Prulato: it also claims to increase penis length, cause stronger orgasms, and improve blood flow to the penis. These are misleading statements—the prostate isn't responsible for improving blood flow or increasing penis length, nor is it physically possible. In addition to its misleading claims, the creator of Prulato was also convicted of fraud in 2008 for conning consumers out of a whopping $100 million dollars. Among his many convictions include mail and bank fraud, started when he began selling his penis enhancement supplements.

Ingredients:
Prulato contains a mysterious proprietary blend of Swedish flower powder, Ho Shou Wu root, Saw Palmetto and lycopene. It also contains some zinc.

Does it Work?:
Probably not. Although several studies identified Saw Palmetto as a successful treatment for an enlarged prostate, our lab tests reveal they aren't using a very potent form of Saw Palmetto, with barely any useful sterols. It's very unlikely it will reduce symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate.

Ho Shou Wu, which is closely related to buckwheat, has not been studied by any reputable health organizations. The only studies that exist are from supplement companies, which may be biased. But even these studies don't identify it as a viable treatment for sexual dysfunction or prostate problems—instead, they claim it reduces hair graying and increases hair fullness.

Studies conducted on flower powder do hint that it may treat prostate cancer, one of the biggest cancers affecting American men today. While they don't recommend using it to treat cancer, they do say it may reduce the risk for developing it. It also may shrink the prostate, reducing pressure on the bladder.

Is it Safe?:
Mostly. Prulato does contain pollen, however, and may cause hay fever in people who are allergic to pollen. The rest of the ingredients are safe for everyday use.

If it's too good to be true, check the facts—numerous studies show Prulato isn't as effective as it likes to pretend. It's not dangerous, but many of these ingredients are not proven to treat prostate problems or improve sexual function. Poor ingredients and outrageous claims earns Prulato a D from us.

Pumpkin Seed Complex

Extracted from the core of pumpkin seeds, Pumpkin Seed Complex is a vitamin-rich concentrate that may improve prostate health. According to their manufacturer, Only Natural, Pumpkin Seed Complex reduces prostate problems by boosting the body with its vitamin-rich base, helping the prostate maintain a normal size. They claim this also improves sexual potency, reducing the signs and symptoms of erectile dysfunction (ED), a common sexual problem for men over 40.

Ingredients:
Pumpkin Seed Complex mostly contains pumpkin seed concentrate. It also contains traces of lycopene, zinc, saw palmetto, isoflavanoids from soy beans, pygeum extract and selenium.

Does it Work?:
It's very unlikely. There is no scientific proof pumpkin seeds (or its derivatives) can improve prostate health. In fact, it's not shown to have a substantial impact on sexual health. Most of the evidence reported by alternative health websites is based on folk medicine, often derived from anecdotal evidence which was not replicated in any scientific studies. It's simply not true that pumpkin seeds have the power to reverse prostate problems: science has proved these are inaccurate statements numerous times.

The amino acids found in pumpkin seeds may provide a minimal benefit for men with an enlarged prostate, however. According to a small study reported in Alternative Medicine Magazine, men who took the amino acids found in pumpkin seeds experienced a decrease in symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate. These symptoms include urinary pain, weak stream, trouble emptying the bladder, and leakage after urinating.

Is it Safe?:
No. Pumpkin Seed Complex contains traces of soy, which can cause an allergic reaction. People who are allergic to soy should not take this supplement.

Like with Swedish Flower Pollen, Pumpkin Seed Complex also lacks the mixture of ingredients needed to truly improve prostate health. So loading up on one ingredient isn't enough to reverse most prostate problems. We recommend avoiding one-ingredient supplements such as Pumpkin Seed Complex, which probably won't help improve the health of your prostate.

Royal Forte Prostate

These pills finish in the middle of the pack as a result of their formulation and due to the results of the laboratory tests. Developed by Wonder Laboratories of White House, TN, these capsules do not contain the highest grade ingredients. Example: the Saw Palmetto extract yields between 44% to 55% sterols. Compare that with the 85% you find in top shelf products. The Pygeum used is a powdered bark NOT an extract. Has nice levels of vitamins D3 and E, as well as Zinc and copper. Touting itself as the ultimate prostate formula for men over 40, Royal Forte Prostate is rich in antioxidants, nutrients and Saw Palmetto, which was shown in some studies to reduce prostate enlargement. Royal Forte Prostate also claims to protect the prostate from serious ailments, such as prostate cancer or enlargement, while using all-natural extracts to support healthy prostate function. It's sure to last long, too—one bottle contains a whopping 120 capsules, which can last up to two months.

Ingredients:
Royal Forte Prostate mostly contains Saw Palmetto extract, pygeum extract, beta-sitosterol, which may improve prostate health. It also includes a blend of nutrients and minerals, including vitamin D3 and zinc.

Does it Work?:
Possibly. Getting enough Saw Palmetto is a must for prostate health, and Royal Forte Prostate contains a whopping 320mg—nearly triple the amount compared to other prostate supplements. Beta-sitosterol also plays an important role in prostate health, shown to successfully treat benign prostatic hypertrophy—or a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland—in some European studies.

Don't assume this means it is completely effective, though. Royal Forte Prostate only contains around 55% of these sterols, which is at least 30% lower compared to other top rated prostate supplements, such as Prostavar or Prost-RX.

But what about pygeum extract? Surprisingly, Life Extension Magazine reports pygeum extract may also treat prostate enlargement while causing gastrointestinal problems, such as diarrhea or constipation. Men with pre-existing gastrointestinal problems may experience more severe side effects, such as severe stomach pain or cramping. These side effects wear off once supplementation is discontinued.

Is it Safe?:
Mostly. There are no significant side effects associated with Saw Palmetto extract or beta-sitosterol—some studies actually suggest it may reduce bad cholesterol. But pygeum extract is known to cause gastrointestinal upset, with effects increased in men with pre-existing gastrointestinal issues. Studies have not been conducted on its interactions with other prostate drugs or supplements, making its true safety unknown at this time.

Royal Forte Prostate contains a core of effective ingredients—Saw Palmetto extract, beta-sitosterol and pygeum extract—but may increase the risk of gastrointestinal problems. It's not a completely safe product, but it's not a completely ineffective product either. There are many other prostate supplements that contain more effective ingredients, however, including Prostavar.

Schiff Prostate Health

This is a low-priced product from one of the oldest supplement companies in the country. It is a “staple item” in virtually every drugstore in America – too bad it tested so poorly. See the lab report in our lab results section. With a one month supply selling for under $19 it is virtually impossible for their product to contain high levels of the ingredients that really work! This product is like going to McDonald’s - cheap and easy to get but not the most nutritious. For example, the product contains 42mg of free fatty acids, compare that to the 286mg of free fatty acids recorded by Solaray Pygeum & Saw Palmetto and it’s not impressive. Some call this the multivitamin of the prostate world—its proprietary blend is rich in cancer-fighting minerals and extracts, including vitamin D, lycopene and selenium. Schiff Prostate Health also utilizes the power of Saw Palmetto, a berry extract known worldwide for its remarkable ability to treat numerous prostate diseases. Schiff Prostate Health claims all of these ingredients are important for improving prostate health, a growing concern for men over 40.

Schiff Prostate Health contains a unique proprietary blend of Saw Palmetto and other antioxidant-rich ingredients, including lycopene, selenium, zinc, vitamin D, copper and calcium.

Does it Work?:
It might. According to the University of Maryland, several studies discovered Saw Palmetto was a successful treatment for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. It significantly reduced urinary problems caused by prostate inflammation, reducing pain, frequent urges to urinate and difficulty passing urine. Other studies also showed it reduced the prostate's size even more effectively as Proscar, a BPH prescription medication. Better yet, there are no significant side effects associated with Saw Palmetto, making it safe for everyday use.

But Schiff Prostate Health may not be using a high quality form of Saw Palmetto. According to a lab report we conducted on its chemical makeup, Schiff Prostate Health contains no detectable levels of polyphenolics or sterols, meaning it was highly processed. Highly processed forms of Saw Palmetto are less effective, and may not improve the health of your prostate.

So if Saw Palmetto won't work, that what is effective? Probably it's rich zinc content, according to a study reported in the Journal of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention. According to their study, men who took daily supplements containing zinc reduced their prostate cancer risk significantly. It doesn't help reduce prostate inflammation, however.

Is it Safe?:
Most likely. There are no side effects associated with any of its ingredients. Overuse of any vitamin can cause side effects, however, so watch your vitamin intake.

Schiff Prostate Health probably won't improve the health of your prostate, and you're better off choosing supplements with more high quality forms of Saw Palmetto, such as Vasotrexx. But it's not all bad news Schiff Prostate Health—it may help lower your risk for prostate cancer.

Solaray Pygeum & Saw Palmetto

Solaray began manufacturing and selling herbal products in 1973, originally as a pioneer in formulating and marketing blended herbal products that contain two or more herbs with complementary effects. This product utilizes pygeum bark extract and wild saw palmetto berry that provide the European recommended consumption levels. This formula is complemented with zinc, vitamin B-6, pumpkin seed and amino acids. In the laboratory it performed well posting a total Free Fatty Acid score of 286mg. The lab analysis is contained in the guide. Out of all the big name companies (those with a product line of more than 50 products) Solaray scored the best. While this is a good product it is still several levels away from the super elite products. While it had two good scores the product is not as comprehensive as it needs to be to provide fast relief. These all-natural gel capsules claim to fight prostate problems right at its source—by treating benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), the main cause behind prostate inflammation and urinary problems. Like Avodart, Solaray Pygeum & Saw Palmetto contains numerous ingredients that fight BPH, but the difference here is the ingredients are all-natural and non-stimulant, which safely and effectively eliminate BPH. If you need your proof, look to the east—products containing pygeum and Saw Palmetto are already gaining popularity in Europe for its ability to treat numerous prostatic diseases.

It only contains pygeum extract and Saw Palmetto, popular prostate health extracts.

Does it Work?:
It's likely. Both pygeum extract and Saw Palmetto have been identified as viable treatments for BPH in Europe, and are common treatment methods for stopping the spread of prostate cancer.

But they aren't recognized as effective treatments in the United States—scientists haven't even started testing both extracts on any patients. Many physicians also highly regard it as part of the alternative health industry, which most doctors do not support. Studies conducted in Europe do show both extracts significantly decrease the effects of BPH, however, despite the fact both are considered alternative health supplements.

Our lab tests also confirm Solaray Pygeum & Saw Palmetto is rich in free fatty acids, which may improve the product's ability to reduce prostate inflammation. But these same tests also reveal it has no detectable sterols, which are commonly found in Saw Palmetto. This strongly indicates the Saw Palmetto extract was highly processed, which reduced its quality and sterol content. Case in point: it's not as effective as the product would like you to believe, and may not be able to treat BPH

Is it Safe?:
Yes. Pygeum extract and Saw Palmetto are highly regarded as safe, side effect-free extracts. No studies have discovered any significant side effects, and is considered safe for everyday use.

Our lab tests reveal their Saw Palmetto extract is of low quality, and may not effectively treat BPH. It's not dangerous, though, and won't cause any severe side effects or contraindications. But is it better than our other supplements? Not by a long shot. The lack of quality ingredients earns this prostate supplement a solid B.

Swedish Flower Pollen

This vegetarian-friendly extract became world famous several years ago when alternative health practitioners reported it could help treat benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. According to SOURCE NATURALS, which sells Swedish Flower Pollen, it treats BPH by improving healthy urine flow, reducing urinary pain and irritation. Although American researchers are currently questioning the validity of these claims, it isn't affecting the interest of consumers: it's currently one of the most popular prostate supplements available today.

Ingredients:
Swedish Flower Pollen contains fiber, calcium and Swedish Flower Pollen (standardized extract).

Does it Work?:
It's very unlikely. Numerous websites, including Life Extension Magazine's website, LEF.org, claim flower pollen was shown to improve urine flow according to some studies, which they have not named. There are currently no nationally recognized studies available about flower pollen's potency against BPH, although many alternative health websites maintain it does exist.

Still think it can help treat BPH? Here's another reason why it won't work: it's a one-ingredient product. Research shows the best way to treat BPH is by using several ingredients, such as saw palmetto, beta-sitosterol and pygeum extract. Although some ingredients, when isolated, can reduce the symptoms of BPH, they can't provide total relief. Swedish Flower Pollen doesn't contain enough ingredients to be a suitable treatment for BPH.

Is it Safe?:
No. Flower pollen can cause an allergic reaction called hay fever. This temporary condition, although not life threatening, can cause sneezing, sore throat, eye puffiness, fatigue, headache, slowed thinking and a temporary decrease in smell senses. People with an allergy to flower pollen should not take Swedish Flower Pollen: its negative reactions are unavoidable.

Ultimate Prostate Formula

Ultimate Prostate Formula claims to treat common prostate problems, such as an enlarged prostate, by naturally increasing antioxidant protection, reducing urinary and prostate dysfunction. It also claims its soft gel formula improves its potency by increasing its absorption in the prostate. So what can expect in a single serving of Ultimate Prostate Formula? An ample amount of pumpkin seed oil, according to their manufacturer, complimented by its unique saw palmetto lipid extract.

Ingredients:
Ultimate Prostate Formula contains vitamin E, selenium, saw palmetto lipid extract, pumpkin seed oil, lycopene and dried black pepper extract.

Does it Work?:
Yes. Ultimate Prostate Formula contains a potent form of saw palmetto, which may improve its efficacy against an enlarged prostate, better known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). According to several studies, saw palmetto reduces mild to moderate symptoms of BPH, including incomplete emptying, weak stream, increased nocturnal urination and bladder pain. It did not reduce the actual size of the prostate, however. Many studies compare its effects to Proscar, a FDA-approved BPH medication. Better yet, it's virtually free of any side effects.

Vitamin E, selenium and pumpkin seed oil have not been proven to reduce prostate problems, however. Both vitamin E and selenium were disproven as prostate aids in the SELECT trial, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). There was even some evidence vitamin E may increase a man's risk for prostate cancer, although it isn't clear why this occurs. Pumpkin seed oil has not been proven to treat any problems affecting the male prostate. People who claimed it treated BPH in the past mostly relied on anecdotal, not scientific, evidence as proof it works. Scientific studies continuously show it has no effect on prostate function.

Is it Safe?:
Yes. Saw palmetto reportedly causes stomach upset, although evidence suggests this occurs rarely.

Ultimate Prostate Formula contains a potent form of saw palmetto, which improves its ability to fight symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Few side effects and a solid formula makes this an excellent formula for improving prostate health.

Urinozinc Prostate Wellness

This prostate formula from the Vitanery company out of Miami, is widely distributed in most major chain store pharmacies. Their box claims it to be a "patented formula" and a silver emblem proudly blares "Formulated by Doctors." Well the doctors must have been drunk when they formulated this because the laboratory report, shows that is contains Zero Free Fatty Acids, Zero Sterols, ZERO Icariin, and ZERO Quercetin and only 1mg total Pholyphenolics. (see attached lab report). This is practically criminal! Imagine if you have been spending your money on this product thinking it is helping you and now thanks to unbiased lab reports, you can see that this product is a rip-off! Compare this score to those of Prostavar, or Prost Rx or Solaray’s prostate product and it’s comical, like comparing a bicycle to a Rolls Royce. Very disappointing. Rich in antioxidant-rich vitamins, minerals and all-natural extracts, Urinozinc Prostate Wellness claims to urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate, better known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). It truly is all natural—all of the ingredients are sugar-free, starch-free, and contains no preservatives or artificial colors. If used correctly, Urinozinc Prostate Wellness supposedly eliminates urinary problems within weeks, providing quick and side effect-free relief from BPH.

Ingredients:
Urinozinc Prostate Wellness contains plenty of vitamin E, B6 and B12, all exceeding the daily recommended allowance. It also contains Saw Palmetto and pygeum africanum, better known as pygeum extract.

Does it Work?:
It's very unlikely. Both Saw Palmetto and pygeum extract are considered viable treatments for BPH in Europe, and is slowly becoming popular in the United States—but not all forms of these extracts are proven effective. So what makes these good extracts? The use of sterols, namely beta-sitosterols, which help amplify its ability to treat urinary problems. Our lab tests show it contains no identifiable traces of any sterols, including beta-sitosterol, making both extracts potentially ineffective for the treatment of BPH.
